This weekend was the opening weekend of the 2024 British GT championship and it started off with some brilliant weather on both Friday and Saturday. After practice was finished on Saturday, Thomas believed he had got the car into a window that would make a perfect race-car for both the qualifying later on and the race on Monday. Qualifying began and Colin was out first, he was able to place the car P3 in Pro-Am class and P8 overall after a clean last lap setting down a time of 1:43.648, putting the car in a good position for the start of Race 1. Thomas then took the car out in the Pro session, showing off his pace and managing to secure his best British GT qualifying result with a time of 1:41.988 leaving them in P3 overall and P2 in class.
Monday then came around and the weather had taken a turn for the worst with heavy rain beating down over Oulton Park as race 1 started. With the Ams starting the race, Thomas was due to get in the car during the scheduled pit stop time, hoping to hop in and gain some time with the Ginetta being a strong car in the wet. However due to the conditions, with both car and driver wrestling, by the time Thomas got in the car he was towards the back of the pack and did his best to make up for lost time. Despite this, Thomas brought the car home in P11 overall and P6 in class, also proving his pace both in the wet and in a new and unproven evolution version of last years G56 GT4. Having the second stint of the race being less than optimal at the start due to a full course yellow taking up a lot of the time, Thomas still managed to be the 5th fastest GT4 driver out on track. A quick lunch break was then had, filled with a very rainy open pit walk, and the opportunity to sign posters and meet any fans who came over to say hi. Once this was concluded, Race 2 was ready to be underway.
Race 2 was set for the Pros to be starting, with Thomas lining the car up in P3 on the grid. After a spell of full course yellows due to some first lap contact, the racing began. Thomas was locked in an intense battle for the majority of his stint with Optimum’s Zac Meakin, with Zac using every trick in the book and really testing his defensive skills to keep Thomas behind. By the time of the pit stop, Thomas was P5 overall and P3 in class, with the team deciding to pit the car opposite Zac with the aim of undercutting him. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances that are being internally investigated inside the team, within the pitstop the car had to be retired from the race. Thomas was rightly very disappointed to be ending the race that way as after doing everything right, it was looking set to be a strong finish with a possible podium on the cards. A note from Tom: “A huge thanks to everyone that helps my racing happen, Ginetta for an amazing car and all of my sponsors and family for providing all of their support even during tough spells like this weekend.”
